Sigma 150-600 Contemporary - Push/Pull instead of rotate

I love this lens with paired with my R7. I always handhold it as I do lot of birding and walk through all sort of terrain. I usually fame the bird at 150 mm and then rotate the zoom to go to 600. Unfortunately it takes couple of flicks of wrist rotation to go from 150 to 600. In that process I lose the framing or the bird is gone.

I figured out that I zoom a lot better and faster by pulling the lens forward by holding at the lip in the front. Is there any downside to using this technique? Will that damage the lens?
