40MP cropping gain over 26MP

I am tempted by Fuji's new 40MP. Looks like the high ISO performance is similar to the 26MP sibling despite cramming in more photocells. I am perfectly happy with 20-ish MP APS-C, and for me, the only advantage I can see with the 40MP is full-size crop on wildlife photos which "increases" the apparent reach of telephoto lenses.

From calculation, the 40MP pictures are 1.238X the linear size of 26MP pictures ie images are 24% larger in the linear dimension. However, I cannot translate this into an apparent field of view gain in terms of "mm focal length of telephoto lens" eg. 300mm -> 400mm.

Of course this depends on the focal length of the telephoto lens you use. The most popular mega telephoto zoom lens with comfortable size and weight is 100-400mm. I wonder if anyone knows a way to estimate the "gain in mm focal length" for 400mm when you digitally crop a full-resolution 40MP picture?
