For portrait work  that isn't in a studio, hands down get a prime.  I bought a RF70-200mm 2.8 first then later a 85mm 1.2 DS.   The background rendering difference is substantially better on the  85, it also has better color.   Really depends on if you need a zoom to do your work though.  Sometimes I need the 70-200mm.
