Why not Nikon? That's where I landed. I really like how they've done their lens lineup. They have a lot of solid and high quality options that don't break the bank, unlike R where your choice options are either cheapo or premium. Don't get me wrong; as full frame lenses they're more expensive than EF-M for the most part, but there are plenty of excellent options in the sub-$1000 range. The 24-70 f/4 is the standard zoom I always wanted, and it was $500 with my Z6 refurb kit, for example. The first-gen bodies are also a great deal.
Hmm, you just sent me down a Nikon rabbithole lol.
The Nikon z6/z6ii looks like the sharpest option for stills. It's a little more expensive, has better autofocus, and a little worse video specs than the Panasonic S5. But I do like the lens lineup of the L mount a little better, which is a huge factor for me. The S5 also has a few other little features I like, such as the 96MP high res stills mode which I think I would actually make good use of.
Do you know if Sigma has plans to make Z mount lenses? One of the attractions to the L mount for me is that Sigma is a member of the L Mount "alliance."
I originally didn't consider Nikon either. I'm not sure why, maybe it's just because I had used Canon for a decade and it seemed so foreign. The main knock on the Z6 and Z7 (as well as the Mark II versions) is autofocus, but honestly with the latest firmware I find it quite good. Better than my M50 was, anyway.
No one knows about Sigma. I haven't heard any more than rumors. Tamron has released three lenses for Z mount already, though; 2 branded as Nikon and one branded as Tamron. There's also a 70-180 on the roadmap that most people think will be another Tamron rebrand. So there are some third-party options, and more can be expected in the future.
