I don't understand Canon's legal actions against third party manufacturers. The near ubiquitous support of the EF mount by third parties is a huge reason Canon was so popular.

It's the other way around. The popularity of the EF mount is why the third parties were so keen to reverse engineer lenses to fit it.

The initial popularity of the EF mount may have attracted third parties, but the mount never would have maintained it's decades of dominance if Canon had taken legal action to block all third party lenses.

Sony never would have taken the number two spot without third party support.

Which is why they encouraged it. You still need Sony / Zeiss lenses to take full advantage of all the functions of the latest Sony bodies.

Do you have any examples of the limitations? I hadn't heard of this before. I do know the RF bodies will do things like reduce burst rates when using adapted EF lenses (even Canon EF lenses).

it is often said that IBIS not work as well with 3ed party lenses ..but i don't know to much about it myself

Whatever Canon's reasoning may be, it certainly does not leave a positive impression with consumers.

There is no argument for FF vs APS-c (or m43) with shallow DOF..as it's a law of physics and a very subjective personal thing if you want to make use of the shallow DOF only FF can offer
