95% of the pictures seen in the world today by young people we made on smartphones.  And that number is still growing.  That is the gorilla in the room that Canon is now wrestling while their are shareholders fearful of survival.

I embrace both smartphone and mirrorless ILC cameras.   The different tools in my tool shed and each has it's place.

I own far more Canon lenses than third party lenses.  I appreciate all my lenses for what they are and can do.  I know Canon lenses will continue to operate far into future and to serve as my tool the represent that is valuable to me.  My smartphone will be changed in five years or less.   It is a different tool so that is ok with me.  My third party lenses lifetime is unknown because it has work perfectly with my next Canon camera body that is not yet known.  Only Canon can attempt some form of assurance of interoperability between generation of Camera body.  I bought the R then the R5 and recently the R7.  My Canon gear transitioned well between generations but my other 3rd party gear was hit and miss.

Canon has right to lawfully pursue patents of their new inventive technology.  Sony does that too and owns many thousands of patents. That keeps the stockholders happy and that is the system that historically to leads to new amazing technology.  I am happy with this system and will continue to buy the Canon brand lenses when I believe they will bring long value to me supporting the emerging technologies.

Many on this forum feel differently and want to buy third party lenses because they are cheaper today.   They have a right to their opinion and it is their choice of what to buy.
