Just to clarify one point. The first shot I posted was a quickie taken on my phone. Yes I know I could have held better! The important thing was that it started the ball rolling on doing things better with a "proper" camera!

In the past week or so, when it's not been raining, I've done a lot of experiments.

Conclusions so far:

Taking

  • Raw
  • Manual everything
  • Zoom or prime equally good
  • Shoot wide to give headroom for "distortions"

Processing

  • Import raw files into Lightroom and ensure lens profile set. No other processing.
  • Merge
  • Do all normal processing on merged image

I appreciate that it is possible to make adjustments to a single image and sync settings across the whole set before merging. I've tried this in my experiments. But as I suspect that may have to tweak things after merging anyway might as well do all post processing in one go. Others may disagree!
