R7 Lens Choice

I have been using the R7 since its launch, my lens of choice is the RF 800mm f11. So far I have no complaints with the combo. I shoot 100% handheld in all lighting conditions. I am looking to try out older EF lenses with the R7 and has narrowed down the following 2 EF lenses for their relatively affordable used prices.

My typical shooting environment is in forest and handheld as tripod would be a hassle to bring along and not very mobile. I walk long distances so total weight will be a consideration for my setup.

(1) EF 400mm f5.6 L USM (about US$500 used where I live). I like that this is a prime, light and its legendary optical prowess. However, I am not sure if it would work well shooting handheld without lens IS. I had tried to look for people who use this combo and there aren't many and most of them are on tripod or shooting in environment with plenty of light.

(2) EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 II USM IS (about US$1,100 used). I like that it is zoom and will give me additional flexibility. However, it will be about 400g heavier and zoom lenses typically focus slower than prime (?) and twice the price of choice (1).

If you have had experience using R7 with either (1) or (2) above and shooting handheld, I would love to hear your experience and advice as to which would be a better choice for my use.

Thank you!
