ExpSIM and AF
1

As I just learned in another dicussion many dont know about the severe effect of the "set exposure", ExpSIM off/on and AF. So I write here my findings with the R5 and now the R7

-if you swich on ExpSIM and dial in a strong OVER- or UNDERexposure AF will start to be slower or even stopps functioning when measuring in a totally white or black areas of the finder or the screen.

-if you swich off ExpSIM in such OVER- or UNDERexposure cases there is no negative AF effect at all. The finder does then not change depending on the set exposure and AF works down und up to extreme brightness levels

So eg dont falsely blame an R5 or R7 to have bad AF in dark situations (as in another discussion here) ! Its the exposure stetting combined with the ExpSIM setting.  For instance to focus on a magnitude 3 star is easily done with a bright lens and a R5 or R7 when you swich off ExpSIM. Same is true for Manual Flash photography when having a cosequently dark finder with ExpSIM on. Swich it off and everything is fine! The new R series cameras have extremely good low light AF! Much better we on most eos DSLRs.

I cannot comment why Canon implementetd it that way but you can test yourself that my assessment is true.

So dont forget to swich OFF ExpSIM in such cases!
