It's not only Sigma who seems to be abandoning Canon crop. Tamron produced a 18-200mm for EF-M in the past, so protocols should be known.

Now they have a new 18-300 for Sony and even for Fuji, but no sign of a Canon versiob... Maybe it's really not worth the effort for them.

I don't know what "signals" those firms get from Canon. Is it their own decision to abandon a certain system? Or does their decision depend on what Canon tells them?

At this point, both Tamron and Sigma have enough sales data on their prior EF-M mount lenses to use as a guide. While the Sigmas may be popular in this forum, my sense is the majority of M system buyers tends to stick with just one or two kit lenses.

That is actually how EF-M being preceived. A mid-tier consumer camera that is designed to used for recreational purposes or semi-pro (YouTuber / IG) purposes. Therefore it is safe to assume the Sigma F1.4 Trios were not welcomed by Canon. It is hard to deny that the Sigma Trios have prolonged the lifespan of Canon EF-Ms for at least a year.

In view of this, it is safe to assume Sigma and Tamron definitely received instructions from Canon that they don't want third party lenses from them compete with their own line up. Therefore, it is very UNLIKELY we will see 18-50 F2.8 on EF-M mount. (However if you know someone from Sigma, you might be able to get a pre-production copy of EF-M 18-50 F2.8.)

Still, Japanese culture values harmony, so it is safe to speculate conglomerates like Canon tried to maintain good relationships with the 2 firms. Although they might received "signal" or "orders" politely asking the them not to produce third party lens until a specific time, Canon might still asking the two firms to produce OEM products for Canon, making them Canon branded Sigma / Tamron lenses.

Well, the cat’s already out of the bag as far as EF-M (and EF) are concerned.  The only thing holding Sigma back right now is Sigma.
