Atomos Ninja - Where should the audio peak in the meter?

Hello.

I'm seeing so much conflicting information on this, but when I'm setting the levels of my Rode NTG mic to record into the Ninja, there is green, yellow, orange, and red on the ninja monitor display.

The general advice is that your audio should average -12db, which on the ninja would be between yellow and orange.

Some say it should mainly stay in green w/ some peaking in yellow.

Others say yellow, peaking in orange.

Which is correct?

Also, should I keep the gain on the Ninja to 0?

Another question, is that along with the color bar that shows me where my audio is peaking, there's a little line to the right of the bar that's often in the red. I would assume this indicates the last audio peak, but my audio color bar never comes close to the red. So what is the line indicating? (see imageā€”the arrow shows how far line is ahead of my general audio levels).
