I have an Apple SD to USB C reader which I can use instead. Overpriced, but works flawlessly (which of course is why Apple can charge so much).

I came to the conclusion that the checkmark "private address" in my iphone wifi settings was on. when i turned it off while my iphone was trying to connect, the camera connected right away. Unfortunately it's on on the next connection and I haven't found a way to turn it off permanently yet.
