I think you make a lot of sense. Canon's positioning of m is the same as their video content.

But I want to ask you a question. Why doesn't Sigma not have the Canon version of 1850?

I am very eager for Sigma's 1850, which is obviously 16, 30, and 56, as well as Fuji and Sony. Why can canon come up with one? All M users are waiting for the emergence of such a lens. With the current ownership of the M system, there is enough market. What's more, this lens has come out, and the rest is to change the bayonet. Isn't it profitable to change this big market?

While the set of EOS M users is fairly sizable, the subset that would spend $500+ on a standard zoom lens is probably not very large.

This is quite true. However just look at all of the “specialty” lenses currently being offered in EF-M Mount by 3rd party manufacturers that have a significantly lower unit sales outlook than what a fast, excellent, and eminently desirable f/2.8 Standard Zoom lens would bring. And the market is already fully established (and has been for years), just waiting for it to materialize in our midst!

Plus no one wants to invest development and production dollars into a system that is clearly being put to pasture by the manufacturer.

Sigma already has the EF-M mount hardware, the proven EF communication protocols, and even the dang lens! The lion’s share of the “investment” has already been committed. All they would need now is a single production run of EF-M mount in one of their factories, and some labels, and (not a heck of a lot of) marketing.

No new M hardware from the Canon means the user base will continue to dwindle with time, which is not exactly an enticing place for third-party lens makers to invest.

Except look at the Staying Power of EF-M. It’s unique, it’s fully mature, and it’ll continue to perform for us for many years to come. Like MAC said, Canon made it “too freaking good!”

Sure, RF-S is newer, but that’s also part of its current weakness. There are only 2 RF-S lenses for it!!. And they’re basically clones of 2 EF-M lenses. Plus there isn’t a fast standard zoom anywhere in sight either for those whopping 2 RF-S camera models. Right now I’d say M has it all over RF-S.

Even if they thought they could turn a profit on it, their bandwidth is limited and there are probably more profitable alternatives.

Sigma themselves have come out saying that their capacity is limited. Personally I see this as a smoke screen for the fact that Canon has shut them entirely out of the RF market. It’s no secret that Canon wants it entirely for themselves for as long as possible.

BUT, they are NOT locked out of the EF/EF-M mount. And have already demonstrated their willingness (several times over in fact) to produce excellent products for it. And ONE more lens from them, just ONE, is all I’m asking.

Vive Le M!
