I'm going to retract my earlier statements; I had a bit of time today to test the incremental focal lengths of the 17-70 on my X-T3. I zoomed the lens in small increments (using the raised ridges on the grip as a rough guide), then checked the EXIF data in ON1. In two tests, the EXIF stated 17mm, 20mm, and 24mm, even though there were 12 shots taken within that focal range. After 24mm, almost every fl value was stated up to 35 (I didn't go beyond that). I have to admit that I have never looked that closely at the actual fl's with any lens unless necessary, so I don't know if it happens with Fuji lenses as well. I may be able to try it with my 70-300 in the next few days. I apologize for not checking my own statement in my earlier post; the lens does not in fact show every fl.

Thanks for re-checking Lettermanian. Not a problem at all. So it appears to me that the so-called "focus-by-wire" does work for the 17-70 but the focal length value reporting to display has problems. Must be something in the handshaking between camera and lens. I have reported this to Tamron.

Meanwhile I have sent my copy back to the seller for a replacement; not for this reason but because of what I consider subpar image quality. If the IQ will be OK I will probably keep the lens; I can live with the fl mis-reporting. Most likely the replacement lens will have the same "feature".

As far as Fujifilm lenses are concerned, I don't think they have this problem. I have a 70-300 also and would have noticed this during testing.
