First impressions: Hands-on with the X-T5
2

My local camera store had an event where I got to check out the X-T5. I already own an X-H2S and I'm interested in getting the X-T5 as well.

What I liked:

  • The grip was surprisingly comfortable. The angle of the grip is slightly different from/better than the X-T4. I was able to get all four fingers on the grip, which I can't do with the X-H2S (my pinky finger falls off of the X-H2S grip). I've got medium-large hands.
  • The smaller overall size/weight is great.
  • The rotary dials on the top of the camera are great, as usual with the X-T series.
  • I really like the stills-centric tilting LCD.

What I didn't like:

  • The EVF is fine, but I can't unsee the amazing EVF of the X-H2 series. Anything else is a disappointment. I would gladly pay more for the upgraded EVF, but that is obviously not an option.
  • The ON/OFF switch was hard for me to use. I realize this is a minor gripe. There was an X-T4 there as well, and I didn't seem to have the same difficulty with the X-T4. It seems to me that the height of the knurling on the switch is shorter on the X-T5, but that might just be my perception. The X-T5 was a "pre-production" unit, so it's possible that could by why the switch height seems shorter on the X-T5 vs. the X-T4.
  • Overall build quality is not on par with X-H2 series, but that is to be expected. I used to have the X-T2, and I feel the build quality was better on that older body. But again, the X-T5 was supposedly a pre-production unit, so that could change.

I wasn't permitted to take any of the images home with me, so I've nothing to report on the quality of the images.

I've watched many reviews of the X-T5 on YouTube, so a lot of what I've mentioned above was already expected. The two points to note that I hadn't heard much about from existing reviews were the grip and ON/OFF switch.
