Seriously, Canon?

Saw the couple of rumor updates lately -
  1. The M200 is discontinued, and the M50ii body only kit is discontinued too
  2. The Canon R6ii and RF 135mm specs and pricing for release soon
When a camera store says "discontinued", it sometimes just means "temporarily out of stock". Canon is probably concentrating on manufacturing higher-margin Rs for Christmas Shopping Season.

Neither M model is on Canon's official Discontinued List.

It is rumor, why so serious?
Because it is not just a rumor.
Take your gears and go out for some nice photo taking. The world is beautiful.
The M6 II discontinuation basically went through three stages. First, there were multiple rumors the camera was being discontinued. Second, the M6 II was listed as discontinued on the Canon Japan Online Store. Finally, the M6 II was officially listed as discontinued on the Canon Global website. Only a few weeks separated each of the three stages.

The M200 is currently on stage 2 with all options listed as discontinued on the Canon Japan Online Store. For the M50 II, body only and 15-45mm kits are both listed as discontinued on the Canon Japan Online Store. The only M system option not listed as discontinued and currently available for purchase are the dual lens M50 II kits with the 15-45mm and 55-200mm.
Here in Germany it is no problem to get the M50 II (body only or kit), the M200 (kit) or the M6 II (body only or kit). For my question to Canon Germany, if the M6 II is discontinued, I got the following answer:

"We have no information indicating, that the production of this camera has been terminated. Current status it is offered furthermore."
Either you local representative is clueless, or they are being disingenuous in an effort to unload remaining inventory.

Production for the M6 II ended in May of this year and the camera is officially listed as discontinued on the Canon Global website - https://cweb.canon.jp/eos/lineup/old-products/
Since you are a longtime R-promoter it should be no problem to use your good Canon connections in order to clear up if this answer is true or not.
You mean Fuji X, eh?

I am not sure. Fuji X, yes, but I sometimes also have the impression, that there is a lot of promotion for Canon R.

Who is clueless or being disingenuous here? 🙄

That is Canon Japan website, not Canon Global.

In case you forgot, Canon is a Japanese company. The webpage that I linked is Canon's official list of discontinued cameras, but feel free to continue living in denial.

Now it is the time to get a beer and some popcorn out.... 😉

Is it easier to find M50 than R10 in german stores, especially the big retailers?
There is no problem to find M50 II at big retailers.

But R10 can also be found there. So, I can't conclude that there is any difference between these two models.

So what? They have different websites for different region and also a Global one. And the one you linked to is not the global one as you claimed. In case you can't see the difference here is the logos for the Japan site and the Global site. I think it is really easy for (almost) everyone to see the difference.

Denial of what? That is the list of old products in the Japan region. Not Global.

Here is the link to the Global site:

Canon is probably clearing stock for the R replacements. The R100 shouldn't be too far away. Maybe a Jan announcement should give you a better idea of pricing.

If you want a deal on outgoing cameras, wait until December.

M's not selling well, so probably time to officially pull the plug.

The fact that the #1 "Mirrorless" camera is a baby monitor should give you a clue that the Amazon rankings are utterly worthless.

Canon makes inexpensive lenses that can be purchased for less than a hundred dollars (USD) to some expensive ones that are over ten thousand dollars. Presently I use four Canon lenses that are all under $300 in price (two EF-M and two EF-S). My fifth lens I use all of the time, is a Tamron 150-600mm lens (Canon EF mount). I'm constantly showing pictures of them nearly each week on Dpreview. I don't understand what you are talking about. Could you give us some more details? What better lenses do you use?

Hey, don't underestimate modern baby monitors. With computational photography they're almost as good as a DSLR. :p

Here is a chart compiled from CIPA data on yearly camera production

Yearly camera production taken from CIPA data
Yearly camera production taken from CIPA data

The highlighted fields above are peak numbers for the respective column. Starting in the 2017, Canon began reporting total interchangeable lens camera (ILC) sales in their financial statements. In general, Canon has always accounted for roughly 50% of the interchangeable lens camera market.

When EF-M launched, the ILC market was quadruple what it is now. When RF launched, the ILC market was double what it is now. Canon, or any other manufacturer, can not continue to support four different mounts in an era of drastically reduced unit volume. The casual shapshot photographer that was buying DSLRs in droves a decade ago, and compact mirrorless cameras a few years later, are now mostly just using their smartphone for photography. Not only is the camera market a tiny fraction of what it was, but those still buying cameras lean much more towards the prosumer/professional end of the spectrum.
Excellent post.
It looks like market saturation and the smartphones are a good reason for the decline.
But I still wonder how much the manufacturers are to blame here for their lack of innovations, they rather cr!pple features to segment their products than develop newer ones. BTW (the word cr!pple has been banned from this site, for overuse, my guess!)

There is still plenty of room left for innovations in this sector, IMHO.
Hell, even firmware glitches that people complain about Canon refuses to fix them.
Personally, in the last 6 years my photo/video money have gone to cool products instead, like drones, gimbals, 360 cameras, etc and of course iPhone upgrades which keep innovating. And all those manufacturers are thriving.

Canon even failed in their transition to mirrorless, they aborted the EF-M mount and came late to fully commit to mirrorless. Otherwise we wouldn't be in this dead-end predicament.
I had money set aside for Canon M glass that never was developed, that money is now with DJI in China.
My satisfaction with Canon, as a brand has declined along the way.

The M50 II is still wrongly placed in the dslr category.
Maybe a certain kit from a certain seller, but there are several instances of the M50 II in that posted link.

I should have been clearer. The old stuff was /is OK. The new RF lenses are stupidly priced. I'm talking of the lenses that are not at the bottom price. What can cannon put up against the olympus 12-100 F4. Price quality. Nothing as far as i can see. What about the 12-40 2.8. Neither of which i have.
