Re: M6 Mark ii, What's Next?

I have the M6 II, the R5 and the R7 in addition to an older 7D II. I previously had a 5D IV but sold it after getting the R5.

In my opinion the M6 II was/is a great little camera. Except for using really big lenses like the EF 100-400 L Mk II, the M6 II outperformed my 7DII hands down, in a much smaller and more convenient package, with better resolution, autofocus and tracking. The only reason I kept the 7DII was that, especially with a battery grip on it, handling a lens the size of the 100-400L II was easier.

I got the R7 when it came out because of compatibility with my R series lenses. I find the RF 18-150 kit lens a good walking around lens, just as I did with the M version. My 7DII now never sees the light of day and the only reason not to sell it is that I might give it away to my son.

Going to the R10 after a M6II would be, in my opinion, a significant downgrade. Going to an R7 on the other hand provides a pathway to the future which the M series does not seem, on current information, to possess.

Now, I have a lot of EF and R lenses, and only the “kit lenses that came with the M6 II. Perhaps I would feel differently if I had a boatload of M lenses, but I doubt it. There just were never any really compelling M lenses released.

My advice would be, either keep loving your M6 II, perhaps by adding the odd EF or EFS lens, or jump directly to the R7. Forget the Sony A6600 or 6700 cameras. I had both and now have none. One of my sons does still have the A6700. The ergonomics are just not great, they have not updated the sensors for years, and the old Sony menu system was never great. they were and are still good cameras, but don’t hold a candle to the M6 II (except for the IBIS - and that advantage disappears against the R7).
