With mirrorless, I have gone back to shutter release focus myself for much of my work.

Can you explain the why? I'm just so used to bbf from years of muscle memory it almost feels weird to to it another way.

Particularly for my stage production shooting. With stage productions, lighting is changing constantly and the subject I'm focusing on not only moves across the stage, but also switches from person to person as one person or the other onstage moves into or out of the primary lighting.

This is the one area that going mirrorless absolutely changed my life. With exposure simulation turned on, I can ride exposure on the control ring with the fingers of my left hand, control the focus point with my right thumb on the LCD, and release the shutter with my right index finger.

Because the subject itself is also switching dynamically from person to person, mere subject tracking doesn't do the job. I need the camera to track, but I also need my thumb to switch subjects as necessary.

But I can't do BBF and control the focus point at the same time, so actual focusing goes back to the shutter release.

This works because I no longer "focus and reframe"...I'm continuously moving the focus point.

There are a few people here and there going back to the shutter. BBF is still a great tool for AF.

Don't Look Up! The very fabric of captured light is noise.
