Just updated a few hours ago, and I swear it's giving much better results than before. Especially in its handling of severe noise (and it seems less likely to over-sharpen now). Or is this just the wine and my imagination?

The latter, I think. For me, the product is still essentially useless. It still over-sharpens and is too heavy on the denoise, removing detail.

Are there not settings to fine tune that?

There are, but they are made hard to access; you have to click on the section, "Remove Noise", or "Sharpen", etc. The idea seems to be it magically does what you want it to, and if it doesn't, the tuning knobs are weird - for instance, under "Sharpen" there is a tuner labeled "clarity" - this seems to be like "remove artifacts" on the regular Sharpen AI but it really doesn't behave the same way, and moving it around doesn't seem to do much. Similarly, there are fewer tuning knobs under "Remove Noise" than you get with DeNoise AI. So far, what I've seen of the results of "Upscale" (the Gigapixel section) are not at all as good as the real Gigapixel. And if you have to descend down to the various tuning knobs, what's the use of the vaunted AI one-click-and-done algorithms?

I can see that they'd want to try to do this but so far I am distinctly unimpressed.

Topaz does say it intends to get Photo AI up to the 3 apps standard and eventually replace them. I've been pretty happy so far and haven't had the need to use the individual apps. However I have not had a tough NR job yet. The thing I like about Photo AI is you can open it as as plug-in and process as a RAW file.

Don't Look Up! The very fabric of captured light is noise.
