Probably to complete a 3 lens f/4 trinity..

On FX DSLR we had the 16-35 , 24-120, 70-200 all pretty good f/4 lenses.

On Z mount we already have the pretty competent 14-30 + 24-70 f/4 versions. A 70-200 f/4 would be pretty useful to have 14-200 coverage at a not too dim f/4.

Yup. My plan is to wait for the Nikon 70-200 f/4 - it has to be collapsible and light though.

In the meanwhile I’m going to jump on that great $350 discount sale on the 100-400.

Where is this sale? At B&H, 100-400 S is not discounted.

The thing about the f-mount 70-200 f/4 is it didn’t differentiate itself enough from the f/2.8 in size and weight. Maybe that’s why it didn’t sell that well. For me from the first time I hefted in the store, it was a no for me, might as well take my f/2.8.

Agree. Add to it the fact that for me it was mounted on a heavy D800E or D810 or D850 which reduced the relative difference in weight. Meaning a roughly 850g f/4 lens was around 57% of a 1500g f/2.8 lens. But attached to a 1kg body the f/4 combo was 1850g which was 74% of the f/2.8 combo at 2500g. That 74% did not feel as dramatic of a difference to me.
