Gee, I'd say that's 70% of your story is right there. How did that come about? It is hardly a common opportunity or situation.

That matter is vastly more interesting than the question about whether to buy a relatively cheap camera.

And what sort of yacht is involved? A racing sloop, versus a motorized floating palace (mini Titanic), are very different vessels.

in November (which will take 18-25 days)

Or it could end a serious disappointment, of one sort or another? Think: calm (who cares?) arrival, versus "abandon ship," argh, swoosh, gargle, blotto.

There's another 10% of your story / yarn, if you live to tell it.

Why would any yacht owner choose November to cross the Atlantic? November is a period of shortening days and still within the period of treacherous storms. Could this be a scheme to ditch a depreciated boat and recover higher insurance claims?

Is the route from west to east or east to west?

and plan to make a video for sharing with friends, personal memory on possibly Youtube in the periods when I'm not either on watch, sleeping or performing other duties.

Why would any Skipper tolerate a "deck hand," who is toying with cameras or vanity projects, whilst urgent hoisting, rigging, hauling, heeling, or scrubbing duties at hand? Even if he / she indulges such things, will how will the rest of the crew respond? Watch your back!

USB charging? Does the yacht have USB ports? In the crew area? Will they work if and when you need them?

Why anguish over whether to spend around $500 to get a recent Go-Pro, and associated accessories? The adventure you postulate (or imagine?) involves, overall, vastly greater matters.

Is there any "day job" back-up for this sort of fantastic fling? That is certainly a more pertinent issue than whether to get a GoPro. If that is of no concern, then I doubt you need any counsel from poorer people who will never be invited to crew on any sea voyage.

All humans prevaricate, at least a little, on occasion. What I regret is that online anonymity begets plenty of hooey.

Cough, cough. Please excuse my congestion. Cough, cough, cough.

Best wishes, in any case. If you are skillful, perhaps your tale will be wonderful.

Brief explanation - it's east to west, Canaries to Caribbean, following trade winds below Azores High. Late November is best time because you don't want to arrive in Caribbean before the end of the hurricane season. Daylight hours much the same throughout the year in the tropics.

The experience is what matters but it would be nice to have a decent quality video record as I might probably won't have the opportunity to do this again. Apart from from factor/ergonomics issues will a GoPro 11 take better 4K than my iPhone XR? Both have USB charging but I'll primarily rely on a power bank. I think the iPhone won't have enough internal storage - icloud is no use if you are off grid.

The Hero 11 takes 5.3K video. Use that and get a high-capacity sd card (256GB), or two (more than enough). The files sizes for 5.3K are not bigger or much bigger than those for 4K so there is no cost essentially, especially if you are using external power. 5.3K gives you flexibility in post - to crop or zoom - or just looks better than 4K no matter how it is viewed.
