There is no distortion issue. Perhaps something wrong with the RAW processor or the lens profiles you are using, that's the only thing I can think of.
To repeat: Every 28mm lens in the world (ever made in the past and ever made in the future) will have exactly the same amount of linear distortion. That's by physical and optical laws, and same is true for any other focal length (70mm or whatever)
If he is happy with the Sigma 40mm, he should just set the Tamron to 40mm
Then there is zero distortion difference.
The perceived distortion is just caused by the perspective you get when shooting from a lower angle. It's subtle but noticable.
