It’s all in the timing

when I saw your first pic I thought you’d got a ring flash, I see that pattern a lot when I use my led ring. It looks like your tinfoil must be a large proportion of the overall size, but it’s working

the inside of your pudding bowl is concave, eg curves inward. Pro diffusers seem to use that shape to help the light envelop The subject, the tricky part is getting the light to shine through from the rear side. Taken to an extreme equidistant light would reach the subject at the centre of a dome

have a look at the Micael widell YouTube channel, at one time he used a sphere on top his flash , eg here
