Since nobody mentioned it yet...

...for easy "ground-level" macro shots without any tripod at all, simply lay a first surface mirror on the ground next to your subject and shoot "down" into that. The view is like standing under your target, shooting "up". You can tilt the mirror to provide any apparent angle of view though (e.g. just "looking" horizontally right at ground level by pointing the camera straight down at a mirror tilted to 45 degrees).

It's a mirrored image, of course, but that's easy to correct in post. Great technique for fungi and adaptable to most other low-level subjects too. If you're only doing tiny stuff at 1:1 with a relatively long FL, then a small (say 5 inch square) pocketable mirror will do for most everything . You'll need something bigger for lower mag or shorter FL (wider FoV).
