However, here is a contraption I made for use in my garden. I use it to photograph newly emerging plants with the camera on the ground.

I affixed a tripod mounting plate to a 8x10 matte board:

I made a few shims to level or raise the board as necessary.

Nice one ! Interesting to see someone's done this, as I had sketched out a diagram for a very similar approach. With my plans, it would have been two pieces of plywood connected by a stiff hinge, in order to change the pitch of the camera by moving the top pieces as required

I didn't proceed with building it after considering that for my fungi shoots, the ground is rarely flat. And that's where I feel the inverted tripod method is the gold standard for what I'm trying to achieve.

In that case, the L-bracket mentioned above seems the best choice. Make a custom center post where the L of the bracket attaches with a large knob for tightening after you adjust your pitch.

Then it's easy to remove the bracket with camera still attached and move on to the next location. Center post stays in place on the tripod.

A machine shop can help. They can make the bracket to your specifications, drill a threaded hole in the center post, and make your large knob.

I used a shop years ago in designing a custom bracket-grip for my Nikon film cameras.
