Agreed with Aoi .

For testing focus issues you need a clearly defined target , not a fuzzy ball .

Stand at 45° to a fence or wall , place a target 99° to you ( square on ) and take a test shot of that .

Standing diagonally to something will allow you to determine front or back focus issues .

You can do this with a yard stick / meter rule , but that will only show you at a close distance with a wide angle lens .

How the camera and lens behaved at distance can be very different ( as you've found ) .
