Great suggestion. I was laying down a tripod in the early days, before coming up with the inverted tripod method.

Another early approach was cutting a 6 x 6 corner out of a heavy duty plastic bag, filling with dry rice and taping it closed with gaffer's tape, to use as a kind of sand-sack. I did NOT use sand though, in consideration of the sack breaking in my camera bag.

Neither of these are fit for my purpose though, as I'm also shooting for focus stacking, and need the camera to remain perfectly fixed in a single position as I manually refocus for the 10-20 shots I need to capture. I also regularly shoot with a super-slow shutter speed, as I'm in dark jungles under the forest canopy, and no continuous light source.
