Re: long tele choices

Maybe I'm a day late, but in case this is helpful - I had exactly the same quandary after buying the R6. I bought the 100-400, and I would do it the same way again. I have rented the 100-500 a couple of times, so I have a little experience with it. There is no question it is a nice lens. I would quickly buy it if somebody dropped the extra cash in  my lap. But walking and travelling with the 100-400 is easy and comfortable. There have been a few times I wished for the extra zoom length or slightly larger aperture, but not very often.

I have so much to learn, I think I have been better served by practicing as much as possible with the 100-400 rather than waiting until I can afford the more expensive lens. I don't regret the decision at all, and the price on the small lens is a great deal.
