Is there such a thing as a Leica M to M42 lens thin adapter? Like a flange adapter?

I have looked everywhere but cant find one.

I have an old Meyer lens and when mounted on a regular LM-M42 adapter wont reach infinity focus and is working like a lens on macro tubes.

And so, I need a thinner adapter.

SO before I take the lens apart and try to change the infinity stop I thought I would ask.

I wouldn't expect one. Thin adapters are most common where a helicoid can be fitted and still reach infinity focus (ie. for mirrorless cameras) Leica M has registration quite a bit longer than most of these - though certainly shorter than SLR mounts.

Would it be sufficient to just carefully sand a millimetre off the M42 end of your standard adapter? This doesn't work with bayonet mounts but should be fine with screw mounts provided you don't mind the lens being rotated.

It will take more than sanding, like chucking it in a lathe which I don't have. Used to, but dont have one any more

What camera are you adapting to?

If to a Leica-M: You could consider an 42mm to 39mm adapter (e.g. similar to filter adapters) and then add an LTM-LM adapter.

Never heard of that camera before. What lens mount is it?

If it's some sort of Leica-M-clone or derivate, you could try my suggestion. Those are cheap parts.

Cool, never heard of that before! I know there was something like this from another brand, also for some japanese camera, but never saw any of these in person :)

It is an AF adapter.

Yes you are right. I believe this is a "knockoff" (no offense) of Techarts Leica M to Sony E AF adapter, except its for Nikon Z. I believe Fotodiox also had something similar.

To a Megadap MTZ11.
The company shows a picture of a Nikon Z + this AF adapter + an M<>M42 adapter with an M42 lens suggesting a workable solution.

If it does not work I would start with measuring each adapter + the combination of both. All with the AF one set to infinity. The AF one should have a depth flange to flange of 11,8mm, the M<>M42 should be 17,66mm, both together 29,46mm. Usually they are a bit less than that though. You could also check a straight (non AF) Nikon Z <>M42 adapter to see whether the lens gets infinity then and measure that adapter too. All before modifying the parts you have.

Based on the Wiki Flange Focal Distance page.

The old Markerink / Cornell page gives a 27,95mm for the M-mount register distance which deviates from most other sources.

Thanks. I have decided this particular lens is not sharp enough to make it useful, although it does have character. Thanks to all for advice.

I will revisit this later.

Most LM to M42 adapter will work, it sounds like there is an issue with the lens itself. I primarily use my Techart Adapter (which is basically the same as yours, except for Nikon Z) with several dumb M42 adapters and have never had an issue.

My experience with the techart had me thinking much the same. Going via the techart tends to make lenses better at infinity focus (I've had several that normally rely on DOF for infinity sharpness).

I certainly have met some LM adapters that don't fit the Techart but they have all been bayonet models there's no advantage of a wide adapter for screw mounts (it just uses more material increasing production costs) while some bayonet mount adapters need careful design to prevent fouling that would not be an issue on LM cameras.

Not ultra thin, but thin could be M-L39 (lose 1mm) then 39->M42 adapter, eg.

Techart or not, you can always have Nikon or E helicoid to LM.

The first similar to that I got (actually MFT to M42) was actually 0.1mm too long for infinity focus. Fortunately the range has improved a lot since then!
