The "old" small-sensor G series ran from G1 to G16 with a couple of numbers skipped. The general tendency was towards higher Mp counts, but there was indeed a drop in Mp after the G10, supposedly for IQ reasons.

The G models with an X in the name are newer and use larger sensors. There are five different lines: G1 X, G3 X, G5 X, G7 X and G9 X. All except the G3 X have got more than one iteration.

Thanks for the clarification. I just won an auction on eBay for a G1X; it looks like a little upgrade from the G12. Higher MP and larger sensor.
