On your terrace I would use a tripod or monopod. When I'm in just one position like that, I use a tripod for continuous use.

I've also carried a tripod when I'm going to set up in different positions around our local park/lake.

those aren't big lenses.......

No but the principle is exactly the same for a big lens and the technique is correct IMHO
