Re: Any teleconverters that work with Canon M series?

In general, any teleconverter that works on a DSLR will work on the M system. The advantage of the M system with teleconverters is there are generally no limits on effective aperture. With DSLRs, some would disable AF if the effective aperture (TC + Lens) was slower than f/5.6 or f/8.

The "officially" supported Canon lens and Canon teleconverter combinations are any prime lens that is 135mm, or longer, as well as most of the TS-E lenses. For zooms, it is any zoom that is painted white. The 70-300mm L is on some official lists and not on others. This is because the teleconverter can only be mounted to the 70-300mm L when the lens is zoomed out to 280mm, or further. Canon lenses that are designed for teleconverter use all have recessed rear elements with large openings at the rear of the lens to make room for the extended front elements of the teleconverters.

Going beyond the "official" Canon combinations, there are numerous third party teleconverters. Some of these mimic the dimension of the Canon versions with extended front elements and others that have a recessed front element to fit any lens. Electronically, some of these third party lens will report their presence to the camera and display the correct effective aperture while others are wired straight through and are invisible to the camera. Third party options are too numerous to list and would need to be considered on a case by case basis.

Aside from some creative handiwork by Larry Rexley, there are no teleconverters available for EF-M mount lenses.

One last broad generalization... 1.4X teleconverters tend to have a minimal impact on image quality while 2X teleconverters tend to have major impacts on image quality.  In many cases, cropping and then upscaling a 1.4X image tends to look no worse than a 2X image.
