I liked what you did here. As a shooter of live street musicians, I know the challenges of making interesting and high-quality videos from live events that one finds accidently.

In particular, I liked the cuts from full body dancer to close-ups of the feet movements and the slow zooms to focus on the face. You kept up with the unpredictable movements of the dancer well. The musicians are well-exposed, given the backlighting. The one issue is the blown-out background (I hate it when the street musicians perform in the shade on a sunny day).

This is an equipment forum. Tell us what you shot with - the mics, the camera, the lens, the picture profile (did you use a log profile to maximize dynamic range?). Were the zooms done in post, or using the lens? Why is the video HD and not 4K?

Tell us more.

Thank you for the compliments. The video was shot in 4K. I am traveling with my antiquated HP8470p. Exporting in 4K would take too long and too hot. I am afraid to burn the machine when I still have another week here in Europe. I will recompile it in 4K when I get home.

I am not much of an equipment guy. Basic GH5 with P/L 12-60mm on a CPL and gimbel. I lucked out. I was able to sit myself in the first row of a step for the entire session.

Thanks. Did you use Vlog L and convert in post, to maximize dynamic range and possibly eliminate the blown-out background? Or just REC709?

I tried blog when I first got the camera and quickly determined that the benefit was not worth the effort to perfect my skills. I shoot very natural mode and adjust the lighting as needed.

I agree that many situations do not benefit from using Vlog. But perhaps your conclusion was bit too hasty.

Your Flamenco video might have benefited a lot, by avoiding the blown-out background, as Vlog extends the dynamic range of the camera considerably from what you shot in. You could have protected highlights and brought up shadows in post. The GH5 advantage over many cameras is that it has 10bit color and Vlog L and thus can utilize all the dynamic range of the sensor.

Transforming Vlog L to REC709 in post in an editor like DaVinci resolve is simple - you just use the built-in transform from Vlog to REC709. A couple of clicks. Then you can do what you want with the clips as if they were shot in REC709, except you have more range to work in.
