Hello Sondering,

I think we have only one or two roundhouses left in the UK. One became part of the National Railway Museum at York, another (Camden, north London) was converted to a theatre in the Sixties.

The third, at Barrowhill near Chesterfield, houses a lot of rolling stock. More important, it remains operational. The sight, sounds and smells of a hot steam locomotive being turned in front of your eyes before a throng of enthusiasts is not to be forgotten.

Despite our largest Pacifics weighing less than a third of a UP Big Boy.

Pity the building was never circular in shape! Alistair.

In the UK there are also surviving roundhouses or semi-circular roundhouses at St Blazey, Leeds and Derby.
