The reason to think about it is to shrink the pupils IF that is something that you think you would like to do.

Agreed. It's the first thing that jumped out at me.

The girl's pupils are fairly large in the Vermeer painting. I suspect that was one of the features the photographer wanted to achieve. The results (posted earlier) are less obvious.

Jan B's intent in this image set is one thing - I'm interested to hear from him.

Thankyou for your interest rumple.

Many portrait photos of the Vermeer painting have been made, but the models do not resemble Vermeer's girl. My goal was to find a model that resembles her. And imitate the painting as real as possible, in terms of color, pearl and lighting/reflections/shadow.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring has much smaller pupils, although certainly not pinholes, than the above images, and this is more clear on the 'camera' left pupil: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/1665_Girl_with_a_Pearl_Earring.jpg
