I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think that simply downloading videos off of you tube is technically "illegal".

Might be skeezy. Might violate YouTube terms of service. But probably not illegal technically.

What would probably violate copyright laws is re-uploading the video to YouTube or another platform and claiming it as your own. Or using significant parts of a video on a COMMERCIAL product.

On the other hand, a company that provides FREE software probably has some functions in it for harvesting your personal data.

You might try an open source program like open shot or kdnlive or something like that because people can actually analyze the source code and see if the program does anything nefarious.
