If I where going on a "once in a lifetime" African safari, I would bring two bodies. Then you can have the whole range at your disposal. I would really consider renting a second camera body. Ultimately the exact same body that you have, so you can be familiar with both.

In one moment the wild animals can be close enough for wide angle next to the car, and in the immediate following moment a great opportunity happen further away.

I would go with 16-55mm f/2.8 on one body, and 70-300mm + 1,4TC on the other.

And it's also great to have two bodies, just in case of failure on one of the bodies occurs.
