The smaller pupil size than typical zooms in this range isn't always a negative, either.  For one thing, that problem with mirrorless cameras ignoring a close subject against a focused background happens less with smaller pupils.

Also, if you are going to be shooting very close things, the tendency to shoot wide open results in DOF that is often more practical for close subjects with depth to them.

When I go out to photograph birds, I use a larger-pupil lens with very low aberration for distant birds, and the RF100-400 for walking paths and shooting what is right next to them.
