So, Sony, here I come??

Any system, even an old, used DSLR can work.  It really depends on what lenses you need and what you are hoping to achieve with the system.  For example, are you a casual user that just needs a basic standard zoom, or do you plan to be upgrading bodies every couple of years?  Are you planning to commit to this new system for only a couple years, or is it going to be a long term investment over a decade?  The "dead" systems did not suddenly stop taking good photos, but a few years from now they may look pretty antiquated as the other systems receive continued development.

Again, it really comes down to the lenses.  If you can clearly define what types of photographs you would like to capture as well as what lenses it will take to do it, you will probably have a better sense of which systems to consider.  Every system has a mix of good/bad/nonexistent lenses.  Find the system where "nonexistent" does not impact you and most of what you need comes from the "good" part of the catalog.
