Both very handsome photographs!

To bring out faint galaxies, I would suggest showing the image as a negative. For some reason, the eye is better attuned to seeing light gray smudges on a whitish background than dark gray smudges on a black background.

If you visit a professional observatory, I would bet you dollars to donuts that all of the displays show images in negatives.
