Yea, I think that Canon is getting ready of the M series. But, not sure about Sony. Maybe should reconsider M4/3? Everyone says that it's a dying system. But, the M4/3 forum is very active.
Personally, I think Sony will update its APS-C A6x00 line at the high end (i.e., replace the A6400) while it's vlogger/video-shooter-focused FX line will appeal to video-centric users as an alternative to FF and the Pana GH line.
As for Micro Four Thirds, the system may indeed die (or dwindle further) in the coming years. But as of mid-2022, it's unreasonable to say it's currently dead. As evidence, this year (in 2022), both OM System and Micro Four Thirds each launched new flagship camera bodies (OM-1 and GH-6). They've also launched quite a few new lenses since mid-2020 (e.g., Oly 8-25mm f4, Oly 12-45mm f4, Oly 40-150 f4, Oly 20mm f1.4, Oly 100-400mm f5-6.3, Pana 9mm f1.7, PanLeica 25-50mm f1.7).
By contrast, Canon's launch dates for EF-M tell us the system is at least comatose if not full-on zombie. The last new bodies for the EF-M system (can you really count the M50ii launch in Oct 2020, which was really a firmware update to the M50?) were the M6ii and M200 which launched in August/Sept. 2019 — three years ago. And the last EF-M lens put forward by Canon was all the way back in 2018.
Again, this isn't to say that the system isn't good (there really aren't any bad systems out there), or discourage you from considering it if what's here will satisfy your needs and wants. It's simply to say that one shouldn't pin any hopes on anything new coming to EF-M in the future.
