Greetings,

My gear was stolen so am in the process of replacing it. I had been shooting M4/3. But, am thinking about A Canon M6 I or ii. Is the ii that much better than the i? And would either of these be a good option for a hobbiest? I normally shoot regular camera club activities and street photography. I had considered the M50,but thought that the M6 was a better shooting experience? I had also considered A6xxx series. Any thoughts?

I’m terribly sorry to hear about your kit being stolen too. Rats!

If I had the chance to do it all over, I would buy exactly the same kit again: The M6ii

What a fantastic camera. Just a joy to use (love that tilting LCD), and so very capable. Operation is very fast, and the autofocus just nails it (I use Spot AF exclusively). The AF is in fact good enough to shoot any activity that I can think of, save for BIFs.

Output rivals my full-frame when shooting RAW and processing with DxO’s Photolab (Deep Prime noise reduction). It’s especially good with the EF-M primes that are available for it (Canon and Sigma).

There’s a good discussion of the M6ii’s capabilities in this previous thread, and you can follow the links I include for samples from sporting events…

Personally, the M System does exactly what I need it to do, and even though it’s been sunset in favor of Canon’s RF(-S), I’ll still be shooting mine until it dies. And then I’ll just buy another one.

Best of luck to you going forward!

Even though we disagree on camera "formats" and style of use (I favour looking through viewfinders and having the camera close to my face and you like LCDs and arms stretched out smartphone style) I totally agree with all your points regarding the capabilities of the "top-end" EF-M cameras like the M6ii and M50ii with perhaps the M6ii having a slight edge on the quality front but not enough to make me switch.

Just like you, I would make exactly the same choices again and hang on to these little M-beauty(ies) until they die. My M50ii paired with my Sigma 56/1.4 or Sigma 30/1.4 equals (if not betters) output I was getting from my FF Canons like 5D3 with a definite advantage on the focusing speed and accuracy compared with 5D3.
