EOS R7 Great Blue Heron flight
8

My R7 got its first big eye tracking test today. I pulled up at a pond at a local park and there was a Great Blue Heron standing in the water about ten or fifteen feet from me. I snapped off several photos of him, then noticed that he was turning away from me. Assuming that he was going to fly, I pulled back my focal length from 400mm to 300mm. My timing was fortunate, because he launched, and while I didn't get him completely in the frame for the first few shots, I'm really happy with what I did get. Just yesterday i had set my camera's autofocus up based on the recommendations in Wild Alaska's video, and it worked great. There were a few shots where his eye was hidden, and in some of those, the camera lost focus, but not in all of them. In the cases where the camera did lose focus, within one or two frames of the eye being visible again, the camera locked on. I'm really happy with these, considering that I was sitting in my car, facing in the opposite direction that the bird flew.. I especially like the photo with the blue zombie on the bench. All the flight shots were at ISO 800, 300mm, f/5.0 The lens was the EF 100-400 MkII using the Control Ring Adapter. A lot of photos, but I think that is sort of necessary to illustrate how well the Camera worked.

The R7 might not be the replacement for the 7D2 for some people, but it has definitely replaced my 7D2, which could have never done this.
