As VinceP mentioned above, and this was covered in a recent thread if you have a backlit subject the Nikon with the TTL Balanced Fill really does make a difference. I believe only the Nikon flashes have this. I had the SB800 previously and it works by using the settings on the flash. The SB500 I got for travel and I love having it in my bag. It also can control the SB800 off camera and the settings are integrated and set in the Z camera.

Ok I get you now. Thanks.

Something is wrong with your settings, because I know my camera wouldn't take these the way you have them taken. For example, the last one is at ISO200. In iTTL, the camera typically sets much higher ISO if you have the camera in Auto ISO. Looks like you fixed the ISO at 200 and the flash is too weak for the aperture/shutter speed/ISO/distance combination.

I will have to conduct the test again when the cats are asleep there.  I don't recall turning off Auto ISO but I may have.  I still think it holds true that the balanced fill works very well with backlit subjects and some of the non-Nikon flashes don't have that mode.
