I wonder if we should be careful about explaining the total light part. Hopefully we all agree that a larger sensor will capture more total light, but that is in the amount of light captured, not how strong or intense that light is. The more important thing might be the strength or intensity of that light per square mm of surface area.  Someone that did not fully understand the concept could easily come away saying, ok if a large sensor captures (therefor requires) more total light, that a small sensor might work better in lower light as it does not require (or capture) as much light as a large sensor.  Didn't say I thought that, as I understand the concept, but can see that it could confuse a beginner.
