Lightmeter

I am here again with a newbie question.

Often i start my photosessions with finding the right exposure and white balance within the camera and it takes time. Not that it is major problem, but it can often be a lil unprofessionel as well when the model is ready to pose. I know it is a part of the game, but maybe a lightmeter would be ideal for me.

But now the question: What does tha lightmeter actually do?

I've got this idea that if i shoot my strobes at the light meter then it tells me with aperture i should use for proper exposure. Lets say i flash the strobes at it says F/5.6 then I know that I have to turn down my strobes if I wish to shoot at F/2.8. and the other way around as well.

Am I getting it right?

Thank you in advance.
