Z9, catwalk and really bad light
5

Having recently obtained a Z9, and having done a fair bit of catwalk shoots myself in he past (80's and 90's on film with manual focus and AF Canon and Nikon SLR's, since the 00's on digital with Nikon DSLR's and Z mirrorless) I read the below threads with much interest

I was surprised by the harsh critisism on the Z9, as I have had positive experience with in particular the 'original' 2018 Z6 right from the start evenb with at te time only FW 1.0 (got my 1st Z6 in mid Nov 2018, shot my 1st catwalk show with it mid Dec 2018, the result impressing me so much I ot a 2nd Z6 within 2 weeks after that)

Also have a 2021 Z7II but not used it for serious catwalk shoots

So went out to shoot a catwalk show at the 'The Hague Fashionweek'

Beautifull venue, old city palace with a big high ballroom and antichanbers

But unfortunately no stage / real catwalk light, but instead intermittently spaced high windows (resulting in a patern of light and shadow on the catwalk) with a couple of chandeliers with LED bulbs trown in the mix

Practically speaking it meant that shooting at I1/250s f/6.3 at 70.0mm iso3200 (I intentionaly wasn't using a 2.8/70-200 zoom, but to make things challenging instead a venerable 4/70-00 VRI I pickrf up cheap in the past) images shot (with Matrix Mode, Auto ISOand Auto WB, turned out like this

20221001 0373 Fashionweek DH Z9 SOOC JPG Basic

Yet, only using Nikon NX Studio (don't have Photoshop or Lightroom, why pay for a lifelong subscriptionwhen I can get NX Studio for free?) I managed to get the following within 5 minutes (half of which was due to having to wait for for my old 2012 I7 16GB Macbook to process the 63MB compressed RAW file), so without any cut/copy/paste trickery

20221001 0373 Fashionweek DH JPG based on NX Studio procesed lossless copressed RAW

So I think it's fair to say the Z9 does handle catwalk in bad light well
