So a f/1.8 on a 1" sensor would still gather more light than a f/3.5 on an APS-C?

While I agree that focal length beats cropping and loosing pixels, I don't think we can discount the lever which was perfected many years ago. So the further the front is past our hands, more effect hand shake is going to reflect in the image. There is probably a fine line where the lever effect and the cropping effect meet, but I have no idea where that might be. I do know that it's harder to hold a 12" long lens steady than a 6" long lens. Of course then we have to concern with subject movement which is intensified with magnification and we can't depend on stabilization to help us there.
