Unfortunately for us, the time to release this lens would have been 5 years ago.

The initial announcement that it was coming came less than a year ago.

Yup, way too late!

The loss of the IS isn't made up for by the extra ⅓-2 stops speed over the EF-M 18-55mm

For ME it is (I shoot a lot of stuff that moves, where IS wouldn’t help). There’s also the benefit of increased DOF control with the faster lens.

which had 10% more reach,

I’ve been OK with 45mm even.

and remains the only EF-M lens discontinued by Canon.

Fortunately I have one of the EF-M 18-55 lenses, and it’s a very useful lens (for what I use it for). Every lens has its particular strengths and weaknesses, and of course part of our job as photographers is to play to those.

As thunder storm says, if you want speed, go for the Sigma 18-35mm,

For M it is indeed the fastest, however…

but that lens misses the point of EOS M for me.

Exactly!

And OTOH that new compact Sigma would split the Papa Bear and Baby Bear just perfectly down the middle!
