R2,

I find your posts here to be entertaining, inspirational, and … depressing.

Entertaining, because the photos are wonderful. Seeing everyday things from new vantage points is something I have always liked.

Inspirational, because it shows just what can be done, especially for those of us who haven’t done “it” yet.

Whoa Carl, many thanks for the props here! Posts like this are inspiring TO ME!

And depressing, because even though I have this same lens, I have very little to show for it. Certainly nothing that I would publish here, nor even show to anyone else. It seems that I don’t have the time - or perhaps the skills - to do this.

You (and anyone) can easily go out and shoot these. Light is always key, and turning the ordinary into the extraordinary is mostly accomplished by adding some dramatic light.

Also, when you approach shooting ANY subject, think of it as though you’re taking a portrait of that object or bird or bug or critter (or person). Get right down eye to eye with it. Work your angles. If you’re shooting macros, think of where your focal plane is (and what’s within the DOF). You’ll be a pro in no time.

This reminds me of an earlier life experience. Many years ago I developed an interest in collecting Roman coins, and with a modest amount of study and budget, I put together a small collection of bronze and silver Roman coins. I found this to be entertaining (because merely possessing something of such antiquity was most interesting and educational), and inspirational (because there were an endless number of additional variations to acquire, along with the additional knowledge). But also … depressing. My ultimate aspiration was to acquire just one aureus (a gold Roman coin). One day while visiting the British Museum, I happened upon an exhibit that included what must have been a whole bucket load of aureii. Really put my modest ambitions in their place, and made me think that I might be better off just looking at what others have done rather than doing it myself.

But - I haven’t given up. I never did get my Roman aureus

You certainly set high goals for yourself!

but I realize after looking at what can be done with the Laowa 65mm, I should be inspired to take the time and effort to give it another try myself. Just don’t hold your breath waiting for me to post anything here, because my expectations are modest.

The seasons are starting to change now. Time to start digging through that toolbox! Happy shooting!
